She knows that Ellis won't be expecting anything fancy, but that doesn't mean she hasn't made an effort. She's baked, she's cooked, she's cleaned her apartment. She's put on a new dress, which is soft and grey and cut in an extremely flattering way. She's barefoot, because she's at home, but she doesn't think that he'll begrudge her that. Everything smells delicious. She's got Miles Davis playing low.

Everything's perfect.
All she needs is Ellis.

They manage to get it back to her apartment. It's a struggle; a whole life, as long and storied as Adaline's has been, carries some weight. He mentions the words on her back, just to tell her that they're there, but Adaline remains tight-lipped until they're back in her apartment. She excuses herself, changing into capris and a t-shirt, a sweater than hides her hands. She comes back into the sitting room and looks at him, standing there in her space for the first time.

"You can ask me about it," she says, tucking her blond hair behind her ear. "If you like."

This time, she's going to make sure that they eat dinner. She's got bread in the over, pasta bubbling away - nothing particularly exciting, a similar dish to the one that she'd eaten the first time they ate together. She's dressed comfortably because she's staying at home, in capris and a pretty blouse, barefoot in her kitchen with her hair caught into a braid over one shoulder. She's spent enough time around Krem that she feels entirely comfortable in his company but there's still a flutter of anticipation at knowing that he's on his way.

She really has no ulterior motive other than thanking him, because he'd been so kind to her on that first day. She's been back to the store that he'd shown her, more than once, so she's back to being able to dress like herself, which helps, a little. Sam had given her his number, when she asked and she thought about it for a day or so before she sent him a message.

Dinner? I'll cook. - Adaline

They'd texted back and forth for a little why, sorting out details and then Adaline had started cooking.

for Krem

It isn't the first time she's ended up somewhere she didn't necessarily intend. In private, she's done her fair share of crying over Flemming - she misses her daughter like a part of her, even after so many years - but in public, she's decided to put a brave face on it. After he'd delivered her to her apartment, Krem had told her that he'd be happy to take her for dinner, once she felt more settled. Adaline's done a little bit to make the apartment her own. She's gone back to the place that Sam bought her and put together a capsule wardrobe that's a sad shadow of her guest room back in San Francisco. She is, in short, trying. And that has to count for something.

It's the middle of the afternoon when she texts Krem.

Dinner would be nice - Adaline.

They arrange to meet at a place that Adaline's walked past a few times. It's not a particularly showy place, but she does make an effort, putting on a dress with a full skirt that reminds her of something she might have bought new in the fifties. She does her hair and make-up. She considers heels for a long time and then decides to wear them anyway. Krem strikes her as someone who doesn't lack for confidence, quiet though it seems to be.

She's a little late when she steps into the restaurant, shrugging out of her coat to let the hostess check it for her.
